New guidance on preventing AI-generated child sexual abuse imagery

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), in partnership with the National Crime Agency (NCA), has published new guidance to help parents, carers and professionals understand the risks associated with AI-generated child sexual abuse material.
30 June 2026

Artificial intelligence is increasingly part of everyday life and can bring many benefits. However, AI can also be misused to create, manipulate and share sexualised images and videos of children. The new resources explain how this can happen, why it matters, and where to access support and reporting routes.

Resources for parents and carers

The parent and carer guide provides practical advice on:

  • understanding AI-generated child sexual abuse imagery

  • recognising how everyday photographs can be manipulated

  • talking to children and young people about image sharing and consent

  • helping keep family photos and personal information secure online

  • knowing where to seek help or report concerns

Resources for professionals

Professionals working with children and young people can also access updated guidance to help them understand and respond to incidents involving AI-generated child sexual abuse material. The guidance includes information about identifying concerns, supporting children and young people, and responding appropriately within safeguarding processes.

Watch the videos

The IWF and NCA have produced a series of videos to accompany the guidance and raise awareness of how AI technologies can be misused to create child sexual abuse imagery. These resources can support conversations with parents, carers and colleagues and help build understanding of this emerging safeguarding issue.
