Cymraeg

We want to inspire children and young people to use Welsh in all aspects of their lives. The Siarter Iaith is for everyone; all members of the school community have a part to play, the school council, learners, workforce, parents, carers, governors and the wider community. This will ensure every school has full ownership of their Siarter Iaith. Together we will increase the social use of Welsh by children and young people.

Welsh-medium and bilingual primary schools across Wales are implementing the Siarter Iaith and there are other programmes for:

  • secondary age learners in Welsh-medium schools
  • learners who learn Welsh in English-medium primary schools (Cymraeg Campus)
  • secondary-aged learners in English-medium schools (Cymraeg Bob Dydd)

This questionnaire gives learners the opportunity to note the extent to which they use Welsh in various situations. It also captures their attitudes towards the Welsh language. Schools use the results of this questionnaire to draw up an action plan. This will be based on the requirements and challanges highlighted in the responses.

A series of targets are set for the whole school community including:

  • learners
  • the workforce
  • governors
  • parents or carers

This will be followed by a period of action. At the end of the implementation period, all learners complete the questionnaire again. On the basis of the evidence gathered the school tracks progress during the period.

Here are the links for all the Siarter Iaith questionnaires. You will need to log in to Hwb to access the questionnaire. Remember to log in to the correct questionnaire for your school and year.

During 2019 to 2020 an evaluation of the Siarter Iaith was commissioned. The evaluation assessed how the Siarter Iaith, along with other related programmes that support the informal use of Welsh among school learners, is being implemented.
