International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2027
TIMSS is an international study that assesses the mathematics and science knowledge and understanding of Year 5 pupils.
Who will take part
Around 150 primary schools and 4,500 Year 5 pupils across Wales will participate. Schools will be selected randomly through an internationally agreed sampling process to ensure the results are representative of learners across Wales.
Why is TIMSS important
TIMSS provides valuable international evidence about how well learners are developing the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in mathematics and science. The findings will help inform professional learning, curriculum development and classroom practice, supporting efforts to improve outcomes for learners across Wales.
Individual school results will remain confidential and will not be published or shared.
Key dates
Schools selected to participate will be contacted during November 2026. Assessments will take place on a date agreed with each school between 17 May and 2 July 2027.
Participating schools will receive support throughout the process from Pearson, which has been appointed by the Welsh Government to deliver the study in Wales.
Whether or not a school is selected to take part, the national results will provide important information to help improve understanding of learner performance in mathematics and science across Wales.
