The guide reflects on the central issues that schools raised through the National Support Programme (NSP) developing reasoning training sessions and describes the steps that schools should take to introduce, develop and embed effective learning and teaching for numerical reasoning at Foundation Phase, Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3.

Numerical reasoning should be a key focus for teachers not only within mathematics but across the whole curriculum, allowing learners to use mathematical thinking to gain access to new understandings in mathematics and across all other subjects too.

The Leadership guide contains advice to school leaders on:

  • the importance of developing learners’ numerical reasoning skills
  • how mathematics, numeracy and numerical reasoning relate to one another
  • how learners can be supported to develop numerical reasoning skills
  • the challenges inherent in implementing numerical reasoning and driving improvement.

Four short video clips, that capture some of the key messages of the Spring 2014 training events for school leaders, and which support the messages contained within this Leadership Guide, are also available.
