Accessing Microsoft at school or from home

Overview

Microsoft 365 is available to school staff, local authority and regional education consortia Hwb users, governors, supply teachers and learners as part of the Hwb additional services.

You can download and install the latest Microsoft tools on your personal devices for free.

Accessing Microsoft 365

Hwb users have 2 options for accessing Microsoft 365.

Via Hwb:

• log in to Hwb
• click on the Microsoft 365 tile
• select the Microsoft 365 application you wish to use

Via Microsoft 365:

• go to the Microsoft 365 website
• enter your Hwb username, click Next
• enter your Hwb password, click Sign In
• select the Microsoft 365 application you wish to use

How to get Microsoft 365 at home

You can download and install Microsoft 365 at home for free. Hwb 365 licenses include the full desktop version of Microsoft Office 365 and a whole host of additional features. They also include Minecraft Education Edition with Code Builder, which provides a range of ways for learners to explore, create and experiment with coding. 

You can install these on up to 5 laptop or desktop computers, 5 tablets and 5 smartphones.

This is available to:

How to install Microsoft 365

You should uninstall any other version of Microsoft 365 you have on your device before you begin installation. Make sure you have permission before you log in.

Windows, Chrome and Mac desktops

On your home device:

1. Log in to Hwb and go to Microsoft 365.
2. Click on Apps on the left hand side and select on the Install apps dropdown (in the top right-hand corner).
3. Click Microsoft 365 Apps.
4. Under Office apps & Devices, click Install Office.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions (installation can take a while depending on the Internet connection speed).
6. Once installed, open an app such as Word and read and accept "The fine print".
7. A pop up will appear asking you to select a Default File Type. Select Office Open XML formats: Click OK.
8. Click Sign in to get the most out of Microsoft 365 (in the top right hand corner) and enter your Hwb username and password. This will connect the additional services to the Microsoft 365 installation, such as OneDrive.
9. If using Windows 10, accept the prompt. You may wish to un-tick Allow my organisation to manage my device and select This app only.

Tablets and smartphones

Simply sign into mobile apps with your Hwb username (for example BloggsJ@Hwbcymru.net) and password.
