Google apps and extensions for Chrome
Guidance on managing Google apps, Chrome extensions and services in Hwb.

Overview
Extensions provide additional functionality within Google Chrome and the websites being accessed. For example, an extension may add a new feature to the browser toolbar, such as a currency converter or enhanced functionality for frequently visited websites.
Google apps (for example, Google Docs) can be configured to appear by default on managed Chromebooks and when users are signed into the Chrome browser.
School administrators and local authority (LA) administrators have different roles and permissions when managing Google apps and extensions. School administrators are responsible for their own school environment. They are the only role with direct access to and control over their school’s devices. This includes managing which apps and extensions are installed on those devices.
Local authority administrators have broader oversight across the LA and its schools. They can manage policies and settings at a higher level. However, they do not have direct access to individual school devices.
Users allocated the Google administrator role can install Google apps and extensions for their own school or local authority depending on their level of access. Access to the Google Admin Console is now separate from the Digital Champion role and requires the Google Administrator role.
Please note that apps and extensions which rely on access to Google Drive or other core Google Workspace services via APIs may not be compatible.
Managed Google Play Store
The managed Google Play store allows users to choose from carefully selected apps to install on their Hwb managed Chromebooks. The managed play store can also force install and deploy apps on Chromebooks.
Apps such as Microsoft Teams or Minecraft Education edition can be easily deployed to Hwb managed Chromebooks.
Users allocated the Google Administrator role can configure and carefully select appropriate applications for their own school or local authority.
However, applications that require access to Drive and core applications via Google Workspace API will not be compatible.
Additional Google services
All Google Additional Services are turned off for learners. This is due to the terms and conditions that apply to these services. Some services may require parental consent, and others may only be suitable for users aged 18 and over.
While some services are available from age 13, Hwb is not able to distinguish between users’ ages and therefore cannot identify which learners meet this requirement. As a result, all Google Additional Services must be disabled for all learners.
Additional Google services are Google applications available through Google Workspace for Education, for example, Google Earth, that are separate from the core educational services and are governed by different terms and conditions.
