What you need to know

Understanding data protection, privacy and online consent is essential in the digital world. Every time we go online, whether it is to search for information, to shop, use social media, send emails, we share information about ourselves.  Sharing our data helps us to access information, use services and stay connected with our family, friends and communities.

Sharing content is an important part of what we do on the internet and while the digital world offers positive opportunities, it can present challenges. It is important that children and young people understand the risks, know their data protection rights under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and how online services need to follow a set of standards when using their data (known as the Children’s Code).
